KOTA INSTRUCTIONS

GAME OBJECTIVE

KOTA is a card game that can be played from 2 to 6 players.  Game includes 115 cards and a dice that will be used on certain occasions. In order to win, a player has to gather 5 leaders and rule the world. Players can use any of the cards in the deck to achieve this, since each one has specific functions indicated on the card itself.

In order to play this game, it is not necessary to know the function of each card, since it is detailed in the card itself.

There are 3 different types of cards: Royale, Battle and Rainbow.

There are 28 (+2 Covid) Royale cards, 34 (+2 Covid) Battle cards and 46 (+3 Covid) Rainbow cards.

ROYALE

Royale cards are yellow and black and have the symbol in the upper left corner. These cards always have to be visible to the other players and are located in front of each of them in a place that we will call "trench". When a player receives a Royale card, no matter when, they have to automatically place it in their trench visible to all players. There is no limit to the number of Royales a player can have in their trench, but these cards can be drawn by other players at any time during the game.

Among the Royales, there are three kinds of cards:

- Leaders. When a player gets 5 leaders in their trench, the game automatically ends and this player wins the game.

- Disposable Royales. These treasures can be discarded and, in exchange, drawn from the deck the number of cards indicated on the card. The number of cards to draw is indicated by        .

- Special Royales. They are Royales with special functions, which are explained on the card and whose function remains throughout the game.

BATTLE

Battle cards are red and have the symbol in the upper left corner. Next to this symbol we can find    and     icons that show attack & defense points that each Battle card has.

Battle cards, unlike Royales, are hidden and can't be revealed to other opponents, so they are placed in each player's hand. There's no maximum amount of cards players can have in their hands. But don't be greedy : )

The purpose of a battle card is to try to get Royales from another player. Battle cards are used when a player declares a battle to another player for any specific Royale. When this happens, the attacking player has to indicate what treasure them wish to obtain, and then faces down a battle card. Normally, only ONE  battle card can be used, unless the cards specifically states otherwise.

After declaring the battle, the player who has the Royale in their trench has to decide whether they defend or not, keeping in mind that the rival's attacking card can't be seen.

  • In the case of not defending, the attacking player wins that Royale and places it in their trench. The used battle card is discarded unless the card says otherwise.

  • In the event that the other player defends, they will have to use a Battle card too. In that case, the attacking player will reveal the card after the defensive card is played in order to compare the battle points of the cards:

- If the attack of the one who has summoned the battle is greater than the defense of the one who is defending, the attacking player gets the Royale.

- If the defense of the defensor is equal to or greater than the attack of the attacker, the Royale will not move from the trench.

If the attack cards require the use of the dice, it will be rolled once the cards are uncovered.

At the end of the battle, the cards of both players will be discarded unless the card itself indicates otherwise.

There are certain Battle cards that have special abilities that are indicated on the card itself.

 RAINBOW

Rainbow cards are multi-colored (similar to a rainbow) and have the symbol in the upper left corner. They have to be keep unseen in your hand. These cards have totally random and unpredictable effects that are indicated on the cards themselves. They can directly affect other players' Royales, help in battles, or fight other special cards...

There are 3 Punishing Rainbow cards in the game. These are the same colors as the regular Rainbows, but with a black background. These cards are automatically shown when drawn, and the player will perform the action described by the card immediately. It is only possible to “get rid” of these cards when you have the “Antivirus” card in your trench or “The Superpussy”. If you draw a card of this type, you will no longer be able to draw any more cards and the turn will go to the next player.

When a Rainbow contains       , “The Pussy” cannot be used to counter that card.

RULES

Before starting the game, keep the following rules in mind:

  • Only one action can be taken per turn, except when using cards that indicate otherwise.

  • Cards are discarded after played, except if cards are used that indicate otherwise. So when you use battle cards, Rainbow, or disposable Royale cards, they will go to the graveyard and cannot be used again.

  • In case of having to draw more than 1 card, you must draw one by one, just in case a negative Rainbow comes out.

HOW TO PLAY

1. Shuffle the cards and deal 7 cards (10 for 2-player games) to each player. Leave the rest of the cards in the center of the table, facing down, forming a deck.

2. Players place their Royales in their trenches, so they can see this apocalyptic world. If a player has 3 or more Leaders at the beginning of the game, shuffle & deal again.

3. The player with less Royales starts the game and the turns go clockwise. If there are two players with the same Royale number, the one with the less leaders will start. If, despite this, they are still tied, the game begins with the player who rolls a higher number on the dice.

4. The game begins and players can only do one of the following on their turn:

  • Discard a disposable Royale that allows you to get new cards from the deck.

  • Use a Battle card to attack for another player's treasure

  • Use a Rainbow card.

  • Do none of the above and draw a card from the deck.

5. Once the player has finished their turn, next player starts.

GAME MODES

2 PLAYER MODE

10 cards are dealt per player at the beginning of the game and the cards with       will be drawn.

In addition, depending on the desired duration of play, 3 leaders and 15 to 20 cards will be drawn at random from the rest of the cards (non-leader royales, battle and rainbow).

ACCORDING TO GAME DURATION

Game mode must be chosen before starting the game.

  • Long: In case you run out of cards in the deck, graveyard cards are recovered, shuffled properly and a central deck is created again. The game will continue the game until one player has 5 leaders.

  • Short (recommended): In case the cards in the deck run out, the player who keeps the “ANTILEADER” card in his trench at that moment will win the game. Get ready for an atomic and agonic battle : )
